Kingfield is a town in Franklin County, ME. Kingfield is the principal gateway to Sugarloaf, a major ski resort, and is headquarters to Maine Huts and Trails. Kingfield was first settled in 1806 and in 1807 land was purchased by William King who became Maine's first governor. In the early days Kingfield farms produced hay, potatoes, apples and pears. Because of the confluence of the Carrabassett River and its' West Branch sites for water power were developed. Other industries were sawmills, shingle mills, grist mill and carriage factory. In 1895 the town became headquarters for the Kingfield & Dead River Railroad, a narrow gauge rail that eventually merged with the Sandy River / Rangeley Lakes Railroad. 1950 brought the development of the Sugarloaf Ski Resort. Kingfield is described by Ski Magazine as "The most beautifully preserved ski town east of Aspen." Kingfield offers an ideal combination of wilderness adventure and quaint town relaxation. Visit Kingfield in the winter to ski, snowmobile, snowshoe atop the Bigelow Mountains. Visit Kingfield in the spring & summer for fishing, boating, hiking or swimming in the "class A" Carrbassett River. Fall brings a spectacular array of leaves and abundant hunting.
